Case Study

Challenge Increase the kitchen storage and work-surface areas in this turn-of-the-century home while retaining existing antique appliances and fixtures. Create space for a dishwasher and accommodate in-kitchen dining.

Solution Disguise an integrated, freestanding dishwasher as an antique cabinet and set it on claw feet adjacent to the drain boards and below a built-in, open cupboard. Add commodious custom cabinets designed to resemble an antique breakfront.

Results The functionality of the redesigned kitchen is enhanced with additional counter space on the new dishwasher and breakfront cabinets, while the existing 1930s wood stove and 1950s porcelain sink/drain boards invoke the original flavor of the home.

Storage is no longer a problem thanks to the roomy new cabinets, and a dining nook at one end of the space comfortably accommodates a table and chairs—out of the way of kitchen activity.
