Case Study

Challenge
Find a way to renovate a cramped kitchen design to expand the scope of the room while improving aesthetics and functionality—all on a strict budget of $35,000.

Solution
Re-use existing appliances, which were new to the home. Opt for full-height, builder-grade cabinets throughout except for one drawer bank. Minimize cabinets costs by placing floating shelves on the sink wall. Install new quartz countertops that were priced by the square foot.

Recess the refrigerator into the wall shared with the garage; replace the existing garage-access door with a more attractive one. Lay affordable vinyl flooring.

Results
This renovation accomplished a quantum improvement to the home while staying within the client’s budget. Adding a new window on the sink wall introduced more natural light into the room, where working counter space is more than doubled.

A new eating bar now houses the microwave and additional cabinet space even as it extends the countertop. The repurposed floating shelves, backed by large format white field tile accented with a decorative mosaic, contribute to the light, airy feeling that now characterizes this thoroughly modern kitchen.
