Case Study
Challenge
The original kitchen in this Craftsman bungalow was cramped and inefficient; shallow 20″ base cabinets and narrow 12″ wall cabinets left little workspace and storage and made meal prep awkward. The layout was awkward: all appliances lined up on one wall, a freestanding shelving unit near the sink, and a portable dishwasher blocking the entry whenever it was in use.
Solution
We reconfigured the layout to create a proper work triangle: deepening the base cabinets to 24″ for better prep space, wrapping additional cabinetry around an under‑used south wall, and relocating the refrigerator to improve traffic flow. We introduced framed inset cabinets in a period‑appropriate painted green, added mullioned glass wall cabinets for lightness, installed a tall pantry next to a large farm sink, and gave the dishwasher a permanent home beside the sink.
Result
The new kitchen feels functional, spacious, and true to the bungalow’s heritage. Prep work is much easier, storage is plentiful, appliance placement is sensible, and the aesthetic vintage‑inspired cabinetry, thoughtful details, and a farmhouse sink restore the home’s original character while making everyday use effortless.
