Case Study
Challenge
The homeowners loved their 1920s Seattle home but found the kitchen cramped, dark, and impractical for two people. A built-in closet squeezed the range wall, storage was limited, and countertop appliances had no proper place. The oversized double-bowl sink wasn’t functional, and the segmented alcove-like layout created a heavy, closed-in feel. The couple wanted a kitchen that respected the home’s historic character while giving them the space, flow, and storage needed to cook side by side with ease.
Solution
Treefrog Design transformed the space with a layout built for two cooks. Removing the built-in closet opened up the range wall, making room for balanced cabinetry. A single-bowl fireclay farm sink improved functionality, paired with the couple’s 18-inch Miele dishwasher, now paneled and relocated. A custom dish rack above it keeps daily dishes within reach. Storage was further increased with pullout fillers near the refrigerator and a built-in vintage-inspired hutch that doubles as a coffee nook. Deep drawers now house pots and pans, and a trash cabinet replaces the old freestanding pail. Floating wood shelves frame the hood, adding warmth that complements the light green cabinetry.
Results
The redesigned kitchen now feels open, intentional, and perfect for two, blending modern usability with the timeless charm of the home’s 1920s roots.
